Luke Cage has been killing it with the soundtrack, enhanced with the badass live performance from Raphael Saadiq (Good Man) and this one from Jidenna

I was just rewatching this scene on YT yesterday. The music for Luke Cage has been phenomenal.

I want to watch Luke Cage a lot, but I’m getting somewhat turned off by the way over intense talk about the “blackness” of the show. I kid you not, there was an entire segment on NPR about this. Also the article on i09. I am not racist, I basically treat it as a situation of “don’t make it an issue, and it won’t be an issue” in my personal life, and usually don’t like racism (among other things) thrust in my face. Is the media way overhyping that aspect? I mean, I love a good superhero story, but I want a story about Luke Cage as a guy, not one that forces every issue to be about race.

If you think I’m being ignorant or stupid about this, I just don’t treat people as their race. We’re all just folks here.

Amazing show, and this is the best music performance in it.

The way I see it? (I’m black by the way, didn’t grow up in the USA), if it needs to be trumpeted, well I don’t care nor do I give it much importance.

In its own right, on its own two feet, it’s a great show with superb acting with great writing, and I just don’t give a single fuck nor do I consider it’s the case just because the actors are mostly black. I’m never in the camp that some work of art (movie, show, painting, music, etc) is good or bad automatically just because that creator is black, or white, or Asian, or whatever other race/creed

What I did find incredibly strange though was that Genghis Connie’s owners were an old (important to note they’re old) Asian couple without a strong accent on either the wife or husband, which would imply they’re 2nd generation, or 1st generation who knew english from a very young age......which is a very unlikely thing in 2016 NYC unless they moved from somewhere on the West coast and are in fact 2nd generation immigrants

Then I will watch it and attempt to not get distracted or drawn in by that part of it. Thanks!

Keep in mind as well that Luke Cage, the comic books, were very up front with the ‘blackness’ and confronting racism.

I didn’t find the ‘blackness’ of the show to be distracting from the show itself. Like I’m white, my wife is black, watching it from the white guy point of view I never felt like the show wasn’t meant for me or didn’t want me to watch it. Luke as a black man is absolutely a point of the show, but Luke as a man is the main focus.

On the other hand, if you’re my wife or mother in law and you’re heavily invested in black civil rights, the show absolutely has something to say to you and you’re going to love that aspect of it as well. Personally, I’ve told my wife I don’t like when things are over the top about it (though I understand why they need to be), but Luke Cage never felt that way.

Can not wait for this dude’s album to come out. This, Chief Don’t Run, Classic Man...plus he did a song with my future wife Janelle Monáe that was good.

I wasn’t much into comic books, well, ever, so I have just a fringe knowledge of the character, except that I liked him on Jessica Jones.

Thank you for that. The coverage has been pretty focused, making it seem like the point of the show, but I will watch it and make up my own mind. I appreciate it!

Sure thing. You’re gonna dig it, as a straight super hero show it’s really excellent. I think the ‘ground level’ heroes Netflix work with all seem to make for great shows.

Next up: Jon Bernthal getting his own Punisher show. Can’t wait for that.

I gotta send this to my wife, cause I don’t know if there’s anything she hates more than people feeling some kind of way about shit that’s got nothing to do with them. Gonna need more Jidenna, dude is super talented.
